There are films that can’t be grasped via a mere synopsis. Describing TUZDAN KAIDE (The Pillar of Salt, Turkey 2018), the feature debut of Burak Çevik (*1993), by saying that a pregnant woman in search of her sister experiences strange things would only be half the story. The film’s formal freedom is what makes it so unforgettable: the locations, including a cave-like space, a botanical garden, a bird shop and a darkroom, hypnotic scenes like the table tennis match or the camera circling two women in a bathtub, repeated rowing trips across a river.
